Boss: Well... I just... I don't like putting the name of the book on the back cover.
Me: Um. But why? We're supposed to, remember? For search engine optimization? So we can sell the book? And I see this on a lot of books. It's not unusual.
Boss: Yeah... But... It's just not my style.

The last time my friend Brian was over, we did this:

We got into the "Play Yard" that had just arrived for my niece Kaylee to sleep in when she visited.

We were testing the strength of the play yard. My niece is 20 lbs, the guidelines said max 30 lbs, and we put 300 lbs in it. You know. Only the best for my niece.

And there was NO alcohol involved in our decision to open, set up, and enter the play yard.

However, Brian did send me alcohol as a thank you for giving him a place to stay while he was in town.

It just arrived.

It came from Winesby.com, and a delightful gentleman walking a dog (who happened to live in the building around the corner) dropped it off on his way home. Bonus: wine AND a cute dog.

And Brian is on his way over, to maybe drink this with me.

Wedding in Texas

Matt and I went to a good college friend's wedding this weekend, in San Antonio, Texas. Or, more specifically, Castroville. Which is, as Matt kept saying, "So damn quaint!"

The wedding was kick-ass, for many reasons.

Reason 1:

They have these things in Texas called Breakfast Tacos. They are amazing, and I want to eat them on a weekly basis.

I think they could be the most perfect food ever invented. And we had them at both the Taco Cabana, which was fine, and this hole in the wall place in Castroville that is only open when it wants to be. Both were great - but you can guess which one was better. Above, from top to bottom, there are 3 kinds of breakfast tacos: a) Chorizo and Egg, b) Country Sausage, Potato, Egg, and Cheese, and c) Bacon, Potato, Egg, and Cheese.

Reason 2:

Ridiculously fun bride and groom (who also happen to be ridiculously good looking):

I love mantilla style wedding veils, and the women in them. The bridesmaids wore black, and carried red roses. The entire wedding party looked truly pretty together.

Reason 3:

It's fun to get dressed up and go out with people that you like:

I haven't had a chance to wear that beaded silk Tracy Reese dress (See above) I bought for my 3 year wedding anniversary since... well, my wedding anniversary. And while I had an amazing time at the Modern on said anniversary, this was an equally fun event.

Reason 5:

The wedding was in Texas. It was 70. Sunny. I didn't wear a coat. I felt the sun on my skin and I loved it.

In New York, it was snowing. I was so happy not to be there.

New Year's Resolution 2009

Well, not so much a resolution as a challenge. Matt bet me that I couldn't read 100 books.

When he bet me this, I was already at 2 and it was only the 3rd of January. I read relatively quickly, and it would be fun to see if I can take it this far. I'm only sad that I finished The Broom of the System on the 30th of December, as that would have been a fitting first novel. Oh well.

Rules: I'm going to update this as I finish books (new books will be at the top). I'll provide dates and very small details of the books or how I found them. They have to be, you know, not vapid shitty books. I welcome suggestions for new books and comments about what I have read!

3. The Sound of Butterflies by Rachael King. Jan 5. Susan gave it to my sister Elizabeth for Christmas and I grabbed it. It ended quickly - the beginning was so detailed and it was like the author ran out of steam.
2. Away by Amy Bloom. Jan 3. Susan gave it to me for Christmas. HIGHLY recommend. I laughed, I cried, I enjoyed the NYC history part of it.
1. Mr Dixon Disappears by Ian Sansom. Jan 1. My mom brought it with her to my house for Christmas, it's a mystery about a man who runs a mobile library. Eh.

Matt Turned 28 Today

Huge shrimp that I quickly poached in water with a lot of garlic and salt, bone-in New York Strip Steaks, rare, a quick pan sauce made with balsamic, roasted red skin potatoes, and peas with pearl onions.

Oh yeah, and a 2002 French wine Matt picked up in Paris just before he came home last month.

It pretty much felt like my birthday, too.

Un Petit Peu de Christmas:

On the day of the first snow in New York City, I went to a Christmas party at the home of the adorable and lovable SCARLETT THE PUG.

Scarlett proves one thing definitively:

DOGS LOVE HUGS.

It's scientific fact. And you can't fight with science. Science will always win.

There was hot spiked cider, but nothing could tear me away from Scarlett. Well, until Matt wanted to play with her.

Now, Matt is a strange fox. He created what he called his Christmas Outfit, which consisted of jeans, a white oxford shirt, a professorial jacket, and a red tie decorated with wreathes. He wore it to every party that didn't require something more formal for almost three weeks.

And that outfit, paired with a dog in a red Christmas dress, and a decorated tree? It didn't take long for the inevitable to happen:

If there was more of ME in that photo (the only me is the scarf - I made it for Matt in approximately 2001), and less "things that are not Matt and Marcia" (someone else's dog, Christmas tree, and apartment), I would actually consider sending out a Christmas card for the first time ever, using this as the image.

But as I, for the above reasons, cannot use that photo for a Pink Shoe Family Christmas Card, so I will continue to resist sending out said Christmas cards until at least 2023. At which point, I'm sure most civilized people will be using e-cards.

Advice to Those Who Would Strip 90 Years of Paint from Crown Molding in Their Bedroom:

It is harder and shittier than you think it is, even if you think it is hard and shitty to begin with.

Use more stripping gel than you think necessary. Buy more stripping gel than you think you will need. Leave it on longer than you think you should.

Work in smaller areas than you think you should - it's better to have a smaller area completed and still have some energy left than to not be able to finish the area you planned to because it's late, you're tired, hungry, and damn sick of this project.

Put huge tarps over everything.

Ventilate.

Fall asleep thinking about how awesome it is going to be when you're done with this whole shitty project.

Buy more "after wash" (aka, turpentine) than you think is necessary.

If possible, live 11 blocks away from the downtown Manhattan Home Depot.

(Guess what I've been doing? Since Saturday? Did I spend 3 hours scraping today? Did I wake up at 7am and put the THIRD ROUND of gel on the window frame I'm trying to strip? Did I rush home at 5 and start scrapping it off? Did I stop at 9 to go to dinner - and hurry to clean up in time for that? Will I have to do at least 6 more sessions? BLEAH.)

If This Wasn't So Absurd, I Might Have Been Offended

Yesterday, I went with my boss to go get lunch. We were walking the 1.5 blocks to our favorite deli, around noon, in SoHo on Varrick. I was inappropriately dressed for the 40 degree weather, high heels and bare legs with a knee-length grey wool dress, and a large pink coat and huge purple scarf. But it was a short walk, and for some reason my legs don't get as cold as they probably should - my arms and neck, they get very cold, hence the coat and the scarf, but my legs, they're practically immune to anything above 25.

Apparently, the local high school had just let out for lunch (or there was a rash of cutting class at noon yesterday), and there was a crowd of ruffians walking down the street. Ten to fifteen twelve to fifteen year old boys were just laughing and joking together and kind of crowding the sidewalk. Typical younger high school male behavior.

As my boss, myself, and two other coworkers made our way though this crowd (not a hard task, they were walking south, we were walking north, we were just walking around each other), one of the hoodlums stopped in front of me and said loudly in my face (I was going to say screamed, but it wasn't that loud or intimidating, just loud enough so all of his friends could hear him - but RIGHT in my face), "You... are... NOT... SEXY!"

And then ran off with his friends.
